According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 3.5% year-over-year in June 2026, down from a peak of 3.8% in April, with core inflation (excluding food and energy) holding at 2.6%. On paper, nominal wage growth of roughly 3.8% has technically outpaced inflation. But averages hide the story. Rent has climbed roughly 41% since 2019, auto insurance about 32%, and groceries near 25% — all faster than the headline CPI — meaning the felt cost of living has outstripped the measured one for a large share of working households.

For small businesses, especially local, service-based ones, the math is even less forgiving. Customer acquisition costs have risen roughly 222% over the past eight years, with a 60% jump in just the last five, even as discretionary consumer spending tightens. The result is a structural mismatch: the tools small businesses have historically relied on to find customers are getting more expensive at precisely the moment their customers have less to spend.
